  • Ceja Ray (Paratrygon aiereba)

    Ceja Ray (Paratrygon aiereba)

    $329.99

One of the more unusual looking freshwater rays, the Ceja or Manzana Ray is widespread throughout the Amazon and its tributaries, where it is usually found in sandy, moderately shallow waters with some current. They are specialized live fish eaters, using their oddly shaped disc to trap and eat entire schools of smaller fish. In the aquarium, they will almost always require live feeders as a diet but it is possible to wean them onto frozen feeds with time and patience. Due to their enormous adult size and challenging food requirements, this species is realistically only suitable for very large indoor ponds and should be kept only by highly experienced hobbyists or professional aquarists.

  • Orange Spot Eel (Mastacembelus liberiensis)

    Orange Spot Eel (Mastacembelus liberiensis)

    $54.99

A medium sized species of Spiny Eel known from Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia in West Africa, the Orange Spot or Liberian Eel is found in shallow, muddy rivers and streams throughout lowland tropical areas. In the wild, it spends much of its time buried in muddy or sandy substrate, using its specialized and highly sensitive nose to seek out prey. In the aquarium, they are a hardy species but will do best with plenty of hiding places as they can be shy at first. A slow and deliberate feeder, they can be outcompeted for food by fast moving or aggressive fish so tankmates should be chosen with care. Like all eels, they will use any opportunity to jump or crawl out of a tank so a tight fitting lid is essential.

  • L090c 'Ojo Chico' Papa Lyretail Pleco (Panaque bathyphilus)

L090c ‘Ojo Chico’ Papa Lyretail Pleco (Panaque bathyphilus)

    Price range: $69.99 through $229.99

Found in the fast-flowing white water reaches of the lower Napo and middle Amazon rivers in Peru, the L090c or ‘Ojo Chico’ (‘small eye’ in Spanish) is an uncommonly seen species of Panaque distinguished by its large lyre-shaped tail and long caudal streamers. Juvenile Panaque schaeferi are often  improperly identified as L090 ‘Papa Lyretail’ as young fish of both species look similar but P. bathyphilus can be distinguished by a more ornate pattern, smaller eyes, and reddish tail fin. Reaching a size of about 14″, this fish is suitable for large aquaria and unlike some species of Panaque retains its attractive pattern and lyre tail through adulthood. Like their relatives, they are adapted for a diet consisting primarily of driftwood in the wild and should be offered plenty of driftwood in the aquarium. They will readily accept fresh veggies and specialty prepared diets like Repashy’s Morning Wood in the aquarium.

    $4.99

The Eques or Diptail Pencilfish is a widely distributed loosely schooling fish found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. With their distinctive ‘head up’ posture (which helps them remain invisible to predators in the wild) and peaceful demeanor they have been a popular fish in the freshwater hobby for decades. Typically found in warm, extremely shallow waters alongside other tetra species, they prefer soft, acidic water conditions but are adaptable in the aquarium. Best kept in groups of 5 or more, they are relatively easy to care for but care should be taken to ensure larger or faster moving tankmates don’t outcompete them for food.

Although normally shy at first, they will become more comfortable spending time out in the open over time and especially when food is added to the tank. Like most of their close relatives, the L129 is not a particularly good algae eater and prefers a more protein rich diet than some plecos. Peaceful toward nearly all tankmates, they can be territorial towards other plecos but will typically coexist without problems long as plenty of cover is provided in the aquarium.

  • Pelican Knifefish Pair (Compsaraia samueli)

    Pelican Knifefish Pair (Compsaraia samueli)

    Price range: $349.99 through $399.99

A rare knifefish found in the deep water channels of the middle Amazon River in Peru and Brazil, the Pelican Knifefish is a distinctive species, with males of the species developing extremely elongated snouts which are assumed to be for interspecific competition for females, which have a more typical head shape for a knifefish. Little is known about their behavior in the wild, but they are likely an insectivore, using their highly developed ability to detect electrical current in order to locate food. In the aquarium, they are shy and best kept in a species tank or with other very peaceful fish. Due to their deep water habitat, very dim lighting, if any, is preferred, and they should be offered plenty of cover.
