  • Glass Darter / Hummingbird Tetra (Trochilocharax ornatus)

    Hummingbird Tetra (Trochilocharax ornatus)

    $9.99

A tiny but attractive and interesting Characin found in Amazon tributaries around Iquitos, Peru, the Glass Darter or Hummingbird Tetra is uncommon in the hobby but sought after by planted and nano tank hobbyists due to its small adult size and vibrant color. It is found in shallow, slow moving water usually over a sand substrate and prefers warm, acidic water in the aquarium. A loosely schooling fish, it is found in groups in the wild and will do best in a group of 10 or more. Given its small size and somewhat shy nature, they should only be kept with similarly sized peaceful tankmates. This species is sexually dimorphic, with males showing elongated, bright red fins.

  • Orange Congo Puffer (Tetraodon miurus 'orange')

Orange Congo Puffer (Tetraodon miurus ‘orange’)

    Price range: $79.99 through $119.99

A unique true freshwater puffer found throughout much of Central Africa’s Congo River Basin, the Orange Miurus or Orange Congo Puffer is a uniquely adapted ambush predator best suited to a species-only aquarium. In the wild, they tend to inhabit fast-moving stretches of water with sandy substrate, where they bury themselves with only their upward-facing eyes and mouth visible. They wait in this position for potential prey items to swim overhead, and then dart upwards, using their sharp beak to tear into their prey (which can include much larger fish). In the aquarium, they will display this same behavior which is why tankmates, even larger fish, are not recommended. A relatively hardy fish, they do best in clean, neutral or slightly alkaline well-oxygenated water with some current. Most Congo Puffers are a tan or beige, but the much rarer orange variant is unmistakable and sought after in the hobby.

  • Albino Red Pacu (Piaractus brachypomum 'albino')

Albino Red Pacu (Piaractus brachypomum ‘albino’)

    Price range: $22.99 through $199.99

One of the larger fish in the Amazon Basin, and an important food fish throughout most of the its range, the Red Belly Pacu is a beautifully marked “gentle giant” suitable for only the largest private aquariums, indoor ponds, or public displays. In the wild, this fish is an opportunistic grazer, which feeds primarily on fallen fruit and nuts from trees overhanging the rivers edge habitat where they are usually found. They are a hardy species, tolerant of a wide range of water conditions – but given their huge size and equally large appetite they will require significant filtration and regular water changes. The Red Pacu will accept almost any frozen or prepared food in the aquarium but should be offered a varied diet heavy in vegetable matter. The Albino morph of this fish only recently entered the market from commercial farms where they are raised primarily as food fish.

  • Centipede Knifefish (Steatogenys duidae)

    Centipede Knifefish (Steatogenys duidae)

    Price range: $34.99 through $39.99

A peaceful and cryptic knifefish species, the Centipede or Sierra Knife is found throughout much of the Amazon basin where it is found in shallow water areas, usually among leaf litter. They feed on insect larvae and crustaceans in the wild but in the aquarium usually take to frozen foods very quickly. A social species, they are best kept in groups in the aquarium and should be provided with plenty of cover in the form of driftwood and leaf litter. This species is shy by nature and tends to feed at night or in dim lighting, so tankmates if any should be chosen carefully as they are easily outcompeted for food by fast moving fish or more aggressive eaters.

    Price range: $14.99 through $39.99

A medium growing and spectacularly colored eartheater from the extensive ‘Surinamensis’ complex of similar-looking species of Geophagus, the Red Head Tapajos Eartheater gets its name from the vivid reddish-orange coloration adult fish display on the front surface of their face.
