  • Avatar Smokey Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

    Avatar Smokey Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

    $59.99

An aquarium hobby classic, the common Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) has been selectively bred into many different color forms and variants over the years. The Avatar Smokey Angelfish is a highly sought after newer color and pattern variant. As a vertically-oriented species, they do best in a large, tall, planted aquarium with plenty of cover. Although peaceful when young, they can be moderately aggressive towards one another as adults but generally do well in a large enough group, usually 5 or more. Most other non-cichlid tankmates will be left alone but they will hunt and eat very small fish or invertebrates. Angels are somewhat sensitive to water quality so care should be taken to avoid large fluctuations in water conditions and partial water changes should be performed regularly.

  • Santa Isabel Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Santa Isabel “Altum” Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

    $124.99

A distinctive regional variant of freshwater Angelfish, the Santa Isabel Redback Angel is also called by the trade name “Santa Isabel Altum” although it is not the true Altum Angel (P. altum) from the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. This Angel is named for its collection locality, the upper Rio Negro around the small town of Santa Isabel, Brazil. One of the characteristics that distinguishes this naturally occurring form of angel is its vivid reddish or pink extending from the head to the dorsal fin. In the wild theSanta Isabel Angel is found in warm, acidic, heavily tannin-stained waters close to fallen branches or submerged driftwood piles. In the aquarium, they will do best when kept under similar conditions, ideally in a group of at least 5 fish and with plenty of cover. Like all freshwater angelfish, they are peaceful for a cichlid and will coexist with a wide range of tankmates provided they are not overly aggressive or small enough to become a meal.

  • Sale! Longnose/Leopoldi Angel (Pterophyllum leopoldi)

Longnose / Leopoldi Angel (Pterophyllum leopoldi)

    Price range: $44.99 through $64.99

A distinctive wild relative of the well-known Freshwater Angelfish (P. scalare), the Longnose, Demini Angel or Leopoldi Angel (Pterophyllum leopoldi) is known from the Rio Negro drainage in Brazil and some middle Amazon tributaries. With a much less elongated body and shorter fins than most other wild type angels, this species can easily be distinguished by their prominent black spot below the dorsal fin and namesake longer “nose“ than its congeners. In the aquarium, they are peaceful for a cichlid but more pushy and sometimes aggressive than the typical Freshwater Angelfish. The Leopoldi Angelfish is a hardy fish that will do well in a variety of conditions in the aquarium but slightly soft, warmer water is preferred. Specimens from the Rio Demini (a tributary of the middle Rio Negro in Brazil) are known for their striking iridescent blue/green coloration, especially around the gill plate.
