An aquarium hobby classic, the common Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) has been selectively bred into many different color forms and variants over the years. As a vertically-oriented species, they do best in a large, tall, planted aquarium with plenty of cover. Although peaceful when young, they can be moderately aggressive towards one another as adults but generally do well in a large enough group, usually 5 or more. Most other non-cichlid tankmates will be left alone but they will hunt and eat very small fish or invertebrates. Angels are somewhat sensitive to water quality so care should be taken to avoid large fluctuations in water conditions and partial water changes should be performed regularly. Our assortment includes a variety of popular varieties, such as marble, silver, zebra, platinum, koi, blushing, and others.

A beautiful and sought after wild type freshwater angel, the Manacapuru Red Head or Red Back Angel is found in the slow moving acidic waters close to where the Rio Negro meets the Amazon in Brazil. The Angels found in this specific locality display vivid red coloration in their face and extending up towards the dorsal fin. This coloration develops more intensely with age and will show best when kept under ideal water parameters, especially in terms of temperature (80F+) and soft, acidic water (pH 6 – 6.5). Like all other freshwater angels, they are best kept in groups when young but will form pairs as adults. The recently developed albino strain shows the same red head color along with white and yellows.

The most sought after of all the freshwater angels, the Altum or High Back Angel comes from the acidic blackwater reaches of the Orinoco River and its tributaries in Colombia and Venezuela. These beautiful but delicate fish require warm, soft water and excellent water quality to thrive. Best kept in groups of 5 or more, the Altum Angel is an unmistakable show fish ideal for a large display aquarium. Our Altum Angels are imported directly and conditioned carefully in soft water systems before being shipped, allowing us to offer only robust, healthy, well-acclimated fish to our customers. A distinctive regional variant of freshwater Angelfish, the Rio Nanay Angel is also called by the trade name “Peru Altum” although it is not the true Altum Angel (Pterophyllum altum) from the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. This Angel is named for its collection locality, the middle Rio Nanay in Peru, a tributary of the middle Amazon. One of the characteristics that distinguishes this naturally occurring form of angel is its vivid reddish or pink spots which become more prominent with age. In the wild the Rio Nanay Angel is found in warm, acidic, heavily tannin-stained waters close to fallen branches or submerged driftwood piles. In the aquarium, they will do best when kept under similar conditions, ideally in a group of at least 5 fish and with plenty of cover. Like all freshwater angelfish, they are peaceful for a cichlid and will coexist with a wide range of tankmates provided they are not overly aggressive or small enough to become a meal.
