The Black Leg Vampire Crab is a small colorful terrestrial crustacean from Indonesia that does well in a semi-aquatic environment. In the wild, they inhabit tropical stream banks and hillsides and are usually found in large groups. In captivity, they require a warm, humid environment with clean moving water. The high contrast orange carapace and black legs make it one of the more striking Geosesarma species.
A large growing, attractive, and extremely aggressive cichlid found throughout much of West Africa, the Zebra Tilapia or Buttikoferi Cichlid is both a popular aquarium fish in the US and a food fish in many other countries. Like most of its relatives, the species is incredibly hardy and will survive in a broad range of water conditions, but prefers slightly alkaline water with temperatures in the middle range of tropical. Zebra Tilapia are fiercely territorial, especially as adults, and finding any tankmates they will be compatible with is a challenge. They are best kept singly or as a pair, although they may tolerate some large, robust dither fish like larger barbs.
The African Dwarf Frog is a small, fully aquatic species of frog found throughout a wide variety of shallow water habitats in Central Africa. Due to their small adult size, ease of care, and peaceful nature they have been popular aquatic pets for many years and are bred on a large scale for the aquarium hobby. In the aquarium they will tolerate a wide variety of water conditions but will do best with plenty of cover and hiding places and temperatures above 75F. This species does especially well in planted aquariums and will get along with nearly all tankmates, although baby fish and shrimp may be at risk. The African Dwarf Frog does not need to spend time outside of water but may climb out of the aquarium if given a chance, so a tight-fitting lid should be considered a must.
An aquarium hobby classic, the swordtail is a livebearing species found through parts of Central America but it has been bred worldwide for the aquarium hobby for decades. In that time, the wild form has been developed in to dozens of varieties and color forms, including the popular red brick, tuxedo, pineapple, and many more. The Kohaku Koi Swordtail is distinguished by its vivid red and white coloration and deep red eyes. A peaceful, hardy, and active fish, they are often recommended for beginners due to their ease of care. Male swordtails display the prominent lower tail fin extension that the species is named for, and females tend to be larger and more heavy bodied.
A colorful, medium-growing species of Cory, the Sodalis or False Network Cory is widespread throughout the middle Amazon in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia where it is found in large shoals in a variety of shallow water habitats. This species is one of several very similar looking Corydoras and is sometimes confused with B. reticulatus or CW061, but the Sodalis Cory lacks a black spot on the dorsal fin. Like most Corys, they are peaceful, hardy, and best kept in groups of 5 or more due to their schooling nature. An excellent community aquarium fish, they will do well with nearly any non-aggressive tankmates.
The Striped Raphael Catfish is a widespread, medium sized Doradid Cat that has been popular in the aquarium hobby for many years. With their peaceful demeanor and attractive striped pattern, this catfish is an ideal tankmate and “clean-up crew” fish for aquariums with medium to large fish provided plenty of cover is provided. In the wild, they are a cryptic species which tends to inhabit leaf litter and driftwood piles in warm, acidic water. A remarkably hardy and adaptable catfish, they will thrive in a wide variety of water parameters and due to their heavily armored body are rarely at risk of being bullied by larger tankmates.
One of the smaller species of South American eartheater, the Choco Red Hump Eartheater is similar to the more commonly seen G. steindachneri from the Magdalena basin but may represent either a regional variant or distinct undescribed species. This variant displays striking yellows, with mature males showing vivid iridescent blue and red as well. A hardy and adaptable species, they tend to take prepared foods better than some of their more delicate relatives but like all Geophagus prefer a fine sand substrate to sift through. A social fish when young, they can become aggressive and territorial when they are large enough to form pairs and spawn.
A small and attractively patterned catfish found throughout much of the Orinoco and Meta River drainages in Colombia and Venezuela, the South American Bumblebee Catfish has been a favorite in the aquarium hobby for many years. With their small adult size, peaceful nature, and colorful black-and-tan pattern, they make an excellent addition to most medium community aquariums. Shy at first, this species will quickly learn to come out when fed and although peaceful towards most tankmates they may attempt to eat very small fish or shrimp.
One of the larger predatory fish found in the Amazon Basin, the Silver Arowana is part of an ancient family of fish known as the bonytongues. A highly adapted surface feeder, Arowana are usually found close to the water’s surface in heavily overgrown areas with lots of cover. They are incredible jumpers, with adults able to leap several feet out of the water, and need to be kept in securely covered aquariums. Due to their enormous adult size, the Silver Arowana is recommended only for dedicated aquarists who can accommodate these giants in either a large custom aquarium or even an indoor pond. Specimens offered for sale are acclimated to aquarium life and feeding well on frozen and prepared foods. The unncommon albino form of silver arowana originated with wild fish but are now produced on farms in Asia.
The Macrostoma Betta (Betta macrostoma), also known as the Brunei Beauty betta or the spotfin betta, is a much more rare and uncommon fish than its well-known Betta splendens counterpart. They are often considered to be the most sought-after species of betta fish amongst enthusiasts! They are found in pools at the top of waterfalls and slow-moving streams in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Macrostoma Bettas are best suited for experienced aquarists, as they tend to require very stable water parameters with relatively soft and acidic water.
A spectacularly marked, large-growing barb found in Southwestern India, the Mascara or Assimilis Barb inhabits clear water streams and rivers with moderate to fast flow. A shoaling fish, they are found in large aggregations in the wild and should be kept in groups of at least 5 fish in the aquarium. Both sexes will show impressive red coloration as mature adults, but males will also develop elaborate dorsal filaments and vivid red dorsal fins. A fast-moving and aggressive feeder, they should be kept with equally large and active tankmates in the aquarium.
A fish with many names, the Roseline Barb, Redline Torpedo Shark, or Denisonii Barb is a vividly colored schooling fish found in the fast moving streams of Western India. With their peaceful, active nature and vibrant red, yellow, and black coloration, this fish has become a favorite in the aquarium hobby – especially among planted tank hobbyists. Although hardy, these fish prefer well-oxygenated water with some current and will display their best colors when excellent water quality is maintained. The wild form from the streams and rivers of Karnataka state, India, is known for exhibiting vibrant, deep red coloration more pronounced than is typically displayed by tank raised specimens.
A lively and effective grazer and scavenger, the Doctor Fish or Pedicure Fish is found in watersheds throughout the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean but is now bred commercially for the aquarium trade. A small, hardy, loosely schooling species, the Doctor Fish gets its name for its use in so-called “fish spas” in Asia, where human clients can get “pedicures” from large numbers of these fish, which will actively graze on dead skin when hungry. In the aquarium, they make an excellent algae eater and grazer but should be provided with a varied diet including plenty of protein. A social species, they will do best in groups of 3-5 or more.
