A large growing, attractive, and extremely aggressive cichlid found throughout much of West Africa, the Zebra Tilapia or Buttikoferi Cichlid is both a popular aquarium fish in the US and a food fish in many other countries. Like most of its relatives, the species is incredibly hardy and will survive in a broad range of water conditions, but prefers slightly alkaline water with temperatures in the middle range of tropical. Zebra Tilapia are fiercely territorial, especially as adults, and finding any tankmates they will be compatible with is a challenge. They are best kept singly or as a pair, although they may tolerate some large, robust dither fish like larger barbs.

One of the smaller species of South American eartheater, the Choco Red Hump Eartheater is similar to the more commonly seen G. steindachneri from the Magdalena basin but may represent either a regional variant or distinct undescribed species. This variant displays striking yellows, with mature males showing vivid iridescent blue and red as well. A hardy and adaptable species, they tend to take prepared foods better than some of their more delicate relatives but like all Geophagus prefer a fine sand substrate to sift through. One of the larger predatory fish found in the Amazon Basin, the Silver Arowana is part of an ancient family of fish known as the bonytongues. A highly adapted surface feeder, Arowana are usually found close to the water’s surface in heavily overgrown areas with lots of cover. They are incredible jumpers, with adults able to leap several feet out of the water, and need to be kept in securely covered aquariums. Due to their enormous adult size, the Silver Arowana is recommended only for dedicated aquarists who can accommodate these giants in either a large custom aquarium or even an indoor pond. Specimens offered for sale are acclimated to aquarium life and feeding well on frozen and prepared foods. A fish with many names, the Roseline Barb, Redline Torpedo Shark, or Denisonii Barb is a vividly colored schooling fish found in the fast moving streams of Western India. A small, hardy, loosely schooling species, the Doctor Fish gets its name for its use in so-called “fish spas” in Asia, where human clients can get “pedicures” from large numbers of these fish, which will actively graze on dead skin when hungry. In the aquarium, they make an excellent algae eater and grazer but should be provided with a varied diet including plenty of protein. A social species, they will do best in groups of 3-5 or more.
