An undescribed species of Severum found in the Rio Inirida in Colombia and Venezuela, the Inirida Spotted Severum displays a striking pattern of red spots throughout the body on a vivid green base. As wild fish from warm, acidic waters, they will display their best colors in a similar setup with soft, low-pH water. Generally peaceful towards similar sized tankmates, they can be aggressive towards each other and should be kept singly or in a large group of 5 or more fish (they will get along with most other Heros species as long as the group is large enough).

A stunning and unique relative of the eartheaters, the Threadfin Acara or Heckelii Cichlid is widespread throughout the Amazon and its tributaries in South America, where it inhabits shallow, sandy stretches of warm, acidic, slow-moving water. They are named for the remarkable filament-like fin extensions that adult fish develop off the dorsal fin. Like their relatives in the genus Geophagus, they will ingest mouthfuls of fine sand substrate and sift out small food items like insect larvae and crustaceans but also readily feed from the surface and water column. In the aquarium, they tend to do best in groups and will coexist with a variety of similarly peaceful cichlids or other fish species, but can be more aggressive and pushy than other eartheaters. These fish will do best in soft, warm water (pH 7.0 or below, temperatures of 80 ) but are adaptable and have been bred commercially for the aquarium trade in Asia and the US.

A distinctive regional variant of freshwater Angelfish, the Santa Isabel Redback Angel is also called by the trade name “Santa Isabel Altum” although it is not the true Altum Angel (P. altum) from the Orinoco basin of Colombia and Venezuela. This Angel is named for its collection locality, the upper Rio Negro around the small town of Santa Isabel, Brazil. One of the characteristics that distinguishes this naturally occurring form of angel is its vivid reddish or pink extending from the head to the dorsal fin. In the wild theSanta Isabel Angel is found in warm, acidic, heavily tannin-stained waters close to fallen branches or submerged driftwood piles. In the aquarium, they will do best when kept under similar conditions, ideally in a group of at least 5 fish and with plenty of cover. Like all freshwater angelfish, they are peaceful for a cichlid and will coexist with a wide range of tankmates provided they are not overly aggressive or small enough to become a meal.
