An aquarium hobby classic, the common Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) has been selectively bred into many different color forms and variants over the years. As a vertically-oriented species, they do best in a large, tall, planted aquarium with plenty of cover. Although peaceful when young, they can be moderately aggressive towards one another as adults but generally do well in a large enough group, usually 5 or more. Most other non-cichlid tankmates will be left alone but they will hunt and eat very small fish or invertebrates. Angels are somewhat sensitive to water quality so care should be taken to avoid large fluctuations in water conditions and partial water changes should be performed regularly. Our assortment includes a variety of popular strains, such as marble, silver, zebra, platinum, koi, blushing, and others.

An unusual freshwater species of a primarily marine family of fish, the South American Needlefish is found throughout much of the Amazon basin, where it inhabits shallow stretches of slower-moving waters, usually in areas with lots of overhanging vegetation and cover. A surface dwelling predator, they are highly adapted to feeding on small fish and insects. In the aquarium, they should be given plenty of open swimming space but will do best with some areas of surface oriented drifwood/branches or floating aquarium plants as they are easily spooked if not provided with some cover. Although at first they can be difficult to wean off live foods, over time they can be trained to accept freeze dried foods like bloodworms or krill and even floating pellets.

On the coasts of West Africa, the charming Atlantic Mudskipper (Periophthalmus barbarus) can be found from Senegal to Angola. These facultative oxygen-breathing creatures inhabit brackish waters close to mangrove swamps and lagoons, where they dwell on muddy substrates. These fish will eat a variety of meals in captivity, including feeder fish, frozen food, small insects, and flake food. The males’ brilliant coloring develops during the spawning season. The sexes are virtually identical outside of this season, however, males can be distinguished by their notably more territorial and aggressive behavior. The fish’s highset eyes, which give them a captivating froglike expression and 360-degree vision, are one of their most distinctive characteristics.

The swift-moving, crystal-clear waterways of northern Brazil are home to the Retroculus xinguensis. Its natural habitat consists of a mixture of sand and gravel, as well as rocks of different sizes. It is advised to use a specific setup for this fish that mimics a swift-moving river with high levels of dissolved oxygen. Ideally, a group of 5-8 individuals should be housed together where they will form a noticeable dominance hierarchy. Although the fish’s natural food is aquatic invertebrate larvae, frozen and pellet foods will be accepted in the aquarium by sifting mouthfuls of the substrate through their gills, extracting edible items.
