Like many Panaque species, it is found in fast moving waters – specifically, the Rio Magdalena in Colombia, which was once essentially inaccessible due to guerrilla and paramilitary presence in the region, which has since declined. In the aquarium, Blue Eyed Plecos are generally hardy, although they will do best if provided with moderate to strong current and plenty of driftwood to both hide among and graze on. The Indo-Pacific Tarpon is a widely distributed predator found throughout the coastal regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Although they can tolerate full marine conditions, they are more often found in fresh or brackish water habitats close to the coast. Juvenile fish are a uniform silver, but develop a distinctive red and black trim on the tail as they grow. As an open water swimmer and predator growing to a massive adult size, the Indo-Pacific Tarpon is suitable only for the largest home aquariums.

The Retroculus lapidifer is an uncommon an unique cichlid from the fast flowing rivers of Brazil, Retroculus are distant relatives of the more well known South American eartheaters.
