The Leopard Kuhli or Calico Kuhli Loach (Pangio shelfordii) is a smaller-growing loach species found in a wide range of habitats, from peat swamps to shallow stretches of large river but usually inhabiting soft, slightly acidic water with a fine sand or mud substrate throughout Sumatra and Borneo. Like most of their relatives, they are hardy fish in the aquarium but prefer plenty of cover and will be most active and happiest in groups of 5 or more.
A spectacularly colored eartheater found only in a few river systems in Southern Brazil, the Sveni Eartheater is considered part of the ‘Surinamensis’ complex of closely-related species which are found throughout most of South America. With intense blue, red, and green coloration and long, flowing ventral fin streamers, the variant of Geophagus sveni from Brazil’s Rio Araguaia is one of, if not the most beautiful and sought after of all eartheaters in the hobby. This species was once an extremely rare import as a wild fish but are now bred on a fairly large scale to supply the hobby worldwide. A relatively peaceful cichlid, the Sveni Eartheater is best kept in groups in an aquarium with fine sand substrate so they can exhibit their natural sand sifting behavior. A varied diet rich in quality proteins and high in red color enhancers like astaxanthin will ensure they develop their most vibrant coloration in the aquarium.
The African Red Snapper or Cubera (Lutjanus agennes) is found in mangroves, estuaries, coral reefs, and even the freshwater rivers and streams along the west African coast. Juveniles are found more in brackish waters where as adults move deeper into the marine environment. These fish should only be kept in extremely large systems since they grow to around 5ft in length. They are considerably aggressive and will attack and eat anything smaller in size.
The African Trout Minnow (Raiamas senegalensis) is found throughout western Africa. This streamlined fish can often be found in the wild schooling with other predatory characins like Tigerfish. They will feel most comfortable being kept with larger dither fish with which they can school. African Trout Minnows will consume any tankmates small enough to fit in their mouth and prefer live feeder guppies as they get established in the aquarium.
The Five Star General Cichlid (Hemichromis elongatus) also known as the Banded Jewelfish is regarded as one of the most aggressive species of cichlids. It will rarely tolerate other fish its size or smaller and will eat anything it can fit in its mouth. They are found throughout Africa and are hardy and adaptable to aquarium conditions. They will readily accept pellet and frozen foods.
A unique species of the primarily marine Cardinalfishes (Apogonidae), the Wichmann’s Cardinalfish or Mouth Almighty Fish is native to the fresh waters of New Guinea. It is found primarily in freshwater lakes and slow moving tributaries with heavy aquatic vegetation or other cover waiting to ambush prey. In the aquarium, they are relatively hardy but may take some time to wean off live feeders.
An aquarium hobby classic, the common Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) has been selectively bred into many different color forms and variants over the years. As a vertically-oriented species, they do best in a large, tall, planted aquarium with plenty of cover. Although peaceful when young, they can be moderately aggressive towards one another as adults but generally do well in a large enough group, usually 5 or more. Most other non-cichlid tankmates will be left alone but they will hunt and eat very small fish or invertebrates. Angels are somewhat sensitive to water quality so care should be taken to avoid large fluctuations in water conditions and partial water changes should be performed regularly.
The Kohaku or Koi Parrot Cichlid (Amphilophus sp. hybrid) is a hybrid cichlid created from selective breeding. These fish have an angular head shape and a charming appearance because of their beak-shaped mouth and vivid red and white coloring. They fish can be kept in groups with one another and do well in communal aquariums. Their non-picky nature means they’ll eat most frozen foods and pellets. These fish can be a great addition to your community tank and have wonderful personalities.
A stream-dwelling cyprinid endemic to the Western Ghats mountains of southwestern India, the Blue Spotted Hill Trout (Opsarius bakeri) is a peaceful, medium growing fish found in large shoals in the wild. They make an attractive dither fish for medium-sized peaceful fish or as centerpiece fish for a planted aquarium. They prefer well-oxygenated water and enjoy moderate to strong current in the aquarium, so the addition of one or more powerheads or circulation pumps is recommended.
The L501 Black Phantasm Pleco is often imported and misidentified with the L102 True Inspector or Snowball Pleco. It is one of several medium sized spotted species of Hypancistrus found in the middle and upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. This species grows somewhat larger than some of its close relatives, reaching an adult size of 7″ and can be distinguished from other similar Hypancistrus by it’s thicker, more robust pectoral fins and lack of spots in the caudal fin. Like its relatives, they prefer warm, slightly soft water and are sensitive to poor water quality so regular water changes are a must. They should be fed a varied diet high in proteins, including frozen bloodworms, and sinking prepared foods.
A recently developed and vibrantly colored form of the common ricefish or medaka, the Platinum Medaka displays a pure white coloration. Like most ricefish, they are a very hardy fish and will do well in most aquariums. The species is an egg layer but will readily breed in the aquarium under good conditions.
The Bonehead Cory (Hoplisoma osteocarum) is a small species of Cory originating in slow moving shallow waters along the Llanos region of the Orinoco Basin in Colombia and Venezuela. Like all Cory species they should be kept in schools of at least 5 or more in the aquarium. They use their barbels to find food in fine, sandy substrate and will do best under similar conditions in the aquarium. Ideal for planted or shrimp tanks due to their small size and peaceful nature.
The O-Ring Nerite Snail (Neritodryas javanica) is a unique, smaller species of snail named for its patterned rings extending around their shells. Like most Nerites, they are found in a wide range of brackish to pure freshwater habitats in Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific. They are extremely popular in the aquarium hobby due to their voracious appetite for nuisance algae, including diatoms and filamentous algae. Plant safe and great addition to any freshwater aquarium, paludarium, or aquascaped/planted tank, these snails can not reproduce successfully without brackish water and therefore will not overpopulate the aquarium.
The Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis) makes a great nano reef inhabitant. These ornate shrimp are known for their dancing motions and affinity for hosting in anemones and corals. They are best kept in groups of 3 or more due to their communal nature.

A stream-dwelling cyprinid found in the shallow, rocky waters of Taiwan, Candidia barbata is a unique and rarely seen schooling fish. Adults male develop spawning tubercles on their face and have a red patch on their lower operculum. They prefer slightly cooler, well-oxygenated water and are very active in the aquarium.
The Wheeler’s Watchman (Amblyeleotris wheeleri) is a small species of shrimp goby that pairs symbiotically with a pistol shrimp. These gobies are reef safe and will want smaller grain sized sand to burrow into. Reaching only 3″ in size, they are appropriate for smaller reef aquariums.
The Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus) also known as a Hoeven’s Wrasse is one of many colorful reef safe wrasses. They inhabit lagoons and sheltered reefs with mixed sand, debris, and coral. They are known to prey upon unwanted invertebrate pests in the aquarium. Keep their adult size around 4.5″ in mind when adding to the aquarium, smaller invertebrates may get eaten. It is advised to add them to a established aquarium with a fine sandbed so they can bury themselves when they feel the need to seek shelter.
A beautiful dwarf cichlid, the popular Apistogramma macmasteri is a peaceful and active fish is found in blackwater creeks and extreme shallow waters throughout the Llanos of South America. A hardy and undemanding species, males will develop vivid red and yellow patches on the ventral and caudal fins when mature.
A note on Apistogramma: Unless otherwise specified, Apistogramma are sold as unsexed individuals. We will make our best efforts to send pairs or a requested ratio of male to female but we do not guarantee sex on these fish. We recommend buying in groups to ensure adequate males and females for breeding.
