    An uncommon, rarely exported member of the genus Leporicanthicus, the Black Vampire or Dottyback Vampire Pleco is found in remote reaches of the Atabapo and extreme upper Rio Negro in Colombia and Venezuela. Their patterns are extremely variable, with some specimens showing spots only on the face and others exhibiting spots throughout the entire body. Generally the spots closest to the tail are gold or yellow. A relatively aggressive and territorial species (like most species in the genus Leporacanthicus) L473 are primarily carnivores, and prefer a protein rich diet.

    A freshwater to marine puffer found along the Pacific Coast of South and Central America, the Bullseye Puffer is a large growing and attractively marked species. When young, they are often found in pure freshwater but migrate to brackish or full marine waters as they reach adulthood. Like most puffers, they are prone to nipping the fins of other fish, so should be kept with hardy, fast-moving tankmates (if any). This species can be kept in  groups, although they should be fed heavily and given plenty of cover to avoid aggression.

A hardy and relatively peaceful species, they are ideal for smaller aquariums and do best with ample cover in the form of plants, driftwood, and small caves.

    Long considered the most beautiful of all freshwater aquarium fish, the discus remains a popular fish for serious hobbyists. Regular, large water changes, a protein-rich varied diet, and warm water temperatures (78-84) will create ideal conditions for discus to thrive. Wild discus like the Red Spotted Green are more sensitive to water quality and are best kept by experienced hobbyists. They will do best in soft, slightly acidic water and may take weeks or even months to display their optimal colors in an aquarium but will reward patient aquarists with spectacular coloration and natural behaviors. These specimens originate from the Rio Nanay in Peru and have been selected for good body shape, red eyes, and full red spotting throughout the body.

    Although less well known than the popular Black Ghost Knifefish, the Brown Ghost is a similarly unique species of knifefish found throughout much of the Amazon basin. A hardy species, they feed on insect larvae, crustaceans, and small fish in the wild but in the aquarium usually take to frozen foods very quickly. They are usually found in areas of slow water movement and in warm, acidic water. Although they can be territorial towards each other in the aquarium, it is possible to keep them in small groups as long as ample cover is provided.

    A rare and spectacularly marked pike cichlid from the Inirida in Colombia and Venezuela, the Fire Spotted or Inirida III pike is a member of the saxatilis-type group. They are found in warm, acidic, fast-flowing waters in the wild but in the aquarium are hardy and relatively adaptable. Like most of their close relatives, this species of Lugubria is a larger growing predatory fish which should only be kept with large, fast-moving tankmates and will generally behave aggressively towards other cichlids.

    One of the smaller species of Pike Cichlids, the Orinoco Dwarf is a relatively peaceful Crenicichla found in the warm, acidic waters of the Orinoco and its tributaries in Colombia and Venezuela. A hardy and active species, they are usually found in groups in the wild and will form a distinct social hierarchy in the aquarium if given enough space. Be sure to provide plenty of cover for each fish to create and defend its own territory. Although they breed in pairs this species is optimally kept in groups of multiple males with a single or very few females, as mature females tend to be extremely aggressive towards each other and males when not kept in groups. This species will rarely bother other, larger tankmates.

    A large, robust, and uniquely patterned species, the Goldline Knifefish (Sternopygus macrurus) is found throughout the Pacific coastal drainage of Colombia and Ecuador, where it inhabits a wide variety of habitat types. These knifefish can be found in fast-moving freshwater streams as well as brackish water estuaries so they appear to tolerate a wide variety of water conditions. A large and outgoing species which will readily eat small fish, these knifefish are ideal for a species tank or a community aquarium consisting of large but relatively peaceful tankmates. Like most knifefish, they appreciate having ample hiding places but are not particularly shy.

A social fish when young, they can become aggressive and territorial when they are large enough to form pairs and spawn.

    A large growing schooling fish found in clear, fast-moving waters in Thailand and Myanmar, the Hampala or Sidebar barb (Hampala macrolepidota) is a predatory but relatively peaceful barb. In the aquarium, they make an excellent dither fish for other large predatory fish and will do best with some water movement and frequent large water changes. Like many larger barbs, they can be skittish and first and will do best in a group of 3-5 fish. Some cover in the form of driftwood or artificial plants (live ones will be eaten) will help them settle into the aquarium environment.

    A medium sized member of the so-called “upper jaw” complex of Polypterus, the Delhezi or Armored Bichir is found throughout much of the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. With their heavy body, prehistoric appearance, and striking banded pattern, this species is popular in the hobby and is now being bred commercially in Southeast Asia. Like most Bichir species, they are hardy and undemanding like but should be kept with a tight-fitting and possibly weighted lid as they will attempt to jump if spooked or at night

    Note on Origin: Small and Medium sized Delhezi Bichirs in most cases are aquacultured in Asia while larger sizes are wild collected from Central Africa.

    The Senegal, or Common Bichir is the most widespread species of Polypterus in Africa, inhabiting shallow waters across a huge geographic area.     A beautifully and distinctively marked relative of the common Otocinclus, the Peppermint Oto inhabits Venezuela’s Rio Orinoco, where it spends most of its time grazing on submerged driftwood and vegetation. An ideal algae eater for most community or planted aquariums, they will eat filamented algae and diatoms from most surfaces, including the aquarium glass. Like most of their close relatives, they are best kept in groups.

Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are important to successfully keep wild discus long term.
