With deep red body coloration and distinctive black spots, this species is a popular aquarium fish that makes for a striking addition to planted or blackwater tanks. In the wild, they inhabit shallow streams and creeks with sandy substrate and soft, acidic, tannin-stained waters, usually among aquatic plants or fallen branches. The crowntail variant is one of the more popular strains and is named for its impressive split finnage . A unique, larger growing species, the Horseface Loach is found throughout Central to Southern Thailand and Malaysia, with other very similar species inhabiting nearby regions. In the wild, they are found in a wide range of habitats but typically prefer sandy/rocky streambeds with moderate to strong water movement. During the day are often found with their bodies burrowed in the substrate and their head above the sand. The Brown Longtail Knifefish is likely an undescribed species very similar to the more commonly encountered Goldline Knifefish (Sternopygus macrurus). It originates from Eastern Colombia in the Meta drainage and could potentially be a regional variant of S. macrurus that lacks the distinctive gold line. Based on their body shape and genus this is likely to be a large and outgoing species that will readily eat small fish, making them suited for a species tank or a community aquarium consisting of large but relatively peaceful tankmates. Like most knifefish, they appreciate having ample hiding places but are not particularly shy.

The longfin variant is a selectively bred trait not found in the wild. The Eight Spotted Leporinus is a smaller growing, attractively marked species found in the Rio Xingu, Tapajos, and other middle and lower Amazon tributaries in Brazil. In the wild, it typically inhabits rocky, fast moving stretches of river and prefers clear, well-oxygenated water. Like most of their close relatives, they are best kept in groups of 3-5 or more as they are a social fish. While they can be prone to nipping fins on slow moving tankmates, this species make excellent dither fish for medium to large South American Cichlids or other fast moving larger fish.
