  • Green Avatar Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

    Green Avatar Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

    Price range: $24.99 through $59.99

An aquarium hobby classic, the common Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) has been selectively bred into many different color forms and variants over the years. The Green Avatar Angelfish is a highly sought after newer color and pattern variant. As a vertically-oriented species, they do best in a large, tall, planted aquarium with plenty of cover. Although peaceful when young, they can be moderately aggressive towards one another as adults but generally do well in a large enough group, usually 5 or more. Most other non-cichlid tankmates will be left alone but they will hunt and eat very small fish or invertebrates. Angels are somewhat sensitive to water quality so care should be taken to avoid large fluctuations in water conditions and partial water changes should be performed regularly.

  • Papuan Crayfish (Cherax pulcher)

    Papuan Crayfish (Cherax pulcher)

    $49.99

Papauan Crayfish (Cherax pulcher) will add unique splash of color to your aquarium. This crayfish, native to Papua New Guinea, is colored in pastel shades of orange, blue, and white. They are active and spend a lot of time searching the aquarium bottom for food. Since they have been known to climb out of tanks, it is advised to use a tight-fitting lid. • Amazon Otocinclus (Otocinclus cf. macrospilus)

    Amazon Otocinclus (Otocinclus cf. macrospilus)

    $3.99

One of the most popular aquarium algae eaters (and for good reason), the Amazon Otocinclus, Oto, or Oto Catfish is a small, schooling suckermouth cat found throughout much of South America. There are several species of Otocinclus commonly imported for the aquarium trade, but of these the larger, more robust species found in the Central Amazon (O. cf. macrospilus) is probably the hardiest and best choice for most aquariums. Safe for all planted tanks and compatible with any peaceful tankmates, the Amazon Otocinclus will feed readily on diatom and other forms of nuisance algae in the aquarium but should be supplemented regularly with sinking veggie-based foods, gel diet, and fresh vegetables like zucchini or romaine lettuce. A social species often found in huge aggregations, all Otocinclus species should be kept in groups of at least 5 but preferably 10 or more fish if space allows.

  • Moustache Danio (Danio dangila)

    Moustache Danio (Danio dangila)

    $14.99

The largest of the true Danio species, the Moustache Danio (Danio dangila) is a schooling fish, native to Asia. It feeds on insects and larvae in the wild and can be found in swift-moving mountain streams. They are un-fussy eaters in captivity, but the finest color development will come from a diet containing bloodworms. These fish will appreciate a habitat that resembles a flowing stream or river with landscaping materials like driftwood, fine gravel, and water-worn rocks. Although these fish are friendly, it is advised to maintain them in larger tanks in groups of eight to ten individuals with sturdy fish of a similar size, as their rapid movements may startle more timid or slower-moving fish. They make great dither fish with gouramis, angels, and other medium sized fish.
