    Green Scat (Scatophagus argus)

    Price range: $19.99 through $24.99

A popular brackish water aquarium fish, the Scat occurs in three distinct color forms (green, silver, and red) which were once thought to be different species but are now all considered to be variants of the extremely widespread S. argus. Found along nearly every coastline of the Indo-Pacific region, scats are amphidromous, which means they regularly move between freshwater in marine habitats. Although they are sometimes marketed as a freshwater fish (and can be kept as such as juveniles), scats will do best in brackish or marine aquariums. The green scat is a t common color variant of S. argus, and is typically found in estuaries and mangrove forests.  Although juvenile scats can tolerate pure freshwater for a while, they will need to be transferred to a brackish or full marine aquarium later in life. A social fish often found in large aggregations, they do well in groups of 5 or more.

  • Brackish Stars and Stripes Puffer (Arothron hispidus)

Brackish Stars and Stripes Puffer (Arothron hispidus)

    Price range: $44.99 through $49.99

The Stars and Stripes or White Spotted Puffer is typically found in marine and reef habitats throughout the Indo Pacific, but like several other pufferfish species it occasionally ventures into brackish water areas like estuaries and lagoons and are able to adapt to salinity as low as 10ppt. These fish were collected in mangrove swamp habitat in Negombo Lagoon, Sri Lanka, where salinity ranges from 10 – 18ppt. Although they will likely migrate out to the Indian Ocean as they grow, juveniles may remain in brackish conditions for extended periods. In the aquarium, we recommend a salinity of around 15ppt with a gradual increase as the fish approach adulthood. A hardy, active, and outgoing species, they will do well with similarly sized fast moving tankmates like Scats, Monos, or Chromides.

  • Freshwater Frogfish (Antennarius biocellatus)

    Freshwater Frogfish (Antennarius biocellatus)

    Price range: $329.99 through $399.99

The lone representative of the marine frog and anglerfish family that is known to venture into brackish to pure freshwater conditions, the ‘freshwater’ frogfish is a unique and fascinating predator rarely seen in the freshwater hobby. Like their saltwater counterparts, they are slow moving, using their elaborate camouflage and lure-like appendage to ambush smaller prey items like crustaceans and smaller fish. In the aquarium, they are best kept in species tanks to ensure they are not outcompeted for food by faster-moving fish and will do best with plenty of rockwork or other cover which they will typically blend into with remarkable skill. Although they are collected in and kept in pure freshwater typically, these fish will do best with the addition of some aquarium salt at minimum and will also adapt with ease to brackish water conditions.

  • 4 Bar Sumatran Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis)

4 Bar Sumatran Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis)

    Price range: $99.99 through $219.99

The Indo Datnoid or Indo Tigerfish (IT) is found throughout Peninsular Malaysia and the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and likely parts of East Java as well. In the wild, they inhabit a variety of habitat types but are typically found in warm, slow moving stretches of rivers or lakes in areas close to overhanging vegetation. An ambush predator, they tend to hang motionless in the water awaiting smaller fish or invertebrates to swim by, using quick reflexes and a huge protrusible jaw to literally inhale prey items. Specimens from Sumatra are especially colorful and well-marked, with the 4 bar variant found in the region among the more sought after varieties of Indo Datnoid in the trade. In the aquarium, they require well-oxygenated water and are sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes are important to keep them thriving. Tankmates should be chosen carefully as they can eat surprisingly large fish and other more aggressive or very active fish will likely stress them out and potentially cause their distinct pattern of bars to fade.
