  • Chaca Chaca Catfish (Chaca chaca)

    Chaca Chaca Catfish (Chaca chaca)

    Price range: $34.99 through $74.99

The bizarrely shaped Chaca Chaca or Indian Frogmouth Catfish is a unique species of bottom dwelling catfish and a classic ambush predator, closely mimicking the appearance of a dead leaf and lying in wait for prey to swim too close to its cavernous mouth. Generally found in shallow, blackwater habitats in Northeastern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, their diet is primarily made up of smaller fish and insect larvae. It can be distinguished from the other members of the genus by its overall lighter coloration and collection point (other species are found exclusively in Southeast Asia). In the aquarium, they are hardly an active species but make for a unique addition to any predator tank. They should be provided a fine sand substrate and ideally some leaf litter or other cover to ensure they can exhibit their natural burying behavior to lie in wait for prey. While live foods are preferred, most specimens will accept frozen food such as bloodworms or mysis shrimp.

  • Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius cf. bagarius)

Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius cf. bagarius)

    $99.99

The Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius bagarius) originating from northern India is one of the true “monster fish”. With their elongated body and broad sensory barbels, these catfish are highly adapted to life in the rocky, fast-moving waters they inhabit in the wild. The Giant Devil Catfish or Goonch Catfish is the largest member of its genus approaching 8 feet or more as adults in the wild. In the aquarium, they are likely to stay much smaller however should be kept in similar conditions to the wild, with clean, well-oxygenated water, strong current and a pond or extremely large aquarium. Rocks and other hides should be provided and they will generally do best with low or subdued lighting.

There is much uncertainty on the actual identity of species within the genus Bagarius. Until there is further scientific revision it is impossible to be 100% sure whether these are true giants or dwarf species (both referred to as Bagarius bagarius in the most recent literature) collected from northern India. • Bolt Catfish (Aguarunichthys torosus)

    Bolt Catfish (Aguarunichthys torosus)

    Price range: $159.99 through $329.99

The Bolt Catfish or Jelly Band Catfish is a beautifully marked, active swimming fish known from the middle and upper Amazon and its tributaries in Peru and Ecuador. A resident of open, typically fast-moving waters in the wild, this catfish spends much of its time swimming actively and exploring its surroundings searching out prey with its long sensitive barbels. An aggressive and somewhat territorial fish, the Bolt Catfish will harass and attack conspecifics and similar-looking fish, especially catfish but will generally leave other fast tankmates too large to be eaten alone. As an adult, this fish will require a sizeable aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and moderate to strong current but makes for a unique display fish due to its active nature and attractive purple, yellow, and silver coloration.

Although this species remains popular in the hobby, it is a freshwater giant, able to reach over 30″ in captivity and requires the largest of aquariums or ideally an indoor/tropical pond to maintain long term.
