The Hingemouth Fish (Phractolaemus ansorgii) is quite the oddball fish originating out of Africa. There is very little information out there about the long term care of these fish. They do seem to be very hardy in captivity, feeding on a variety of frozen and pellet foods. They are well mannered, reported to live long lifespans, and reach a fairly decent size around 9″. A small, peaceful gourami species found in the blackwater peat swamps of Borneo, the Samurai Chocolate Gourami or Vaillanti Gourami is relatively rare in the hobby due to its relatively restricted range and unique requirements. In the wild, these fish inhabit warm, highly acidic waters with pH as low as 4.0, and in the aquarium it will do best if kept in soft, slightly acidic water as well. The addition of tannins to the water by using Indian Almond Leaves or Bark is useful to help this species thrive. A sexually dimorphic species as adults, females in breeding coloration display a striking pattern of vertical red bars.

Like many of its close relatives in Central America, this species is threatened by habitat degradation and competition from nonnative species. They are sensitive to water quality so frequent large water changes should be considered essential to long term success with this species.

Like most of its relatives, the species is incredibly hardy and will survive in a broad range of water conditions, but prefers slightly alkaline water with temperatures in the middle range of tropical. Zebra Tilapia are fiercely territorial, especially as adults, and finding any tankmates they will be compatible with is a challenge. They are best kept singly or as a pair, although they may tolerate some large, robust dither fish like larger barbs.

The Green Jade Shrimp is a selectively bred form of Neocaridina freshwater shrimp developed for its vivid, uniform green coloration.
