Juvenile fish have impressive butterfly-like pectoral fins which develop into more traditional fins as they grow. Like most of its relatives, they tend to be found in fast-moving stretches of murky water, and they rely on their sensitive barbels much more than their limited eyesight to find prey. An unusual dwarf species of whiptail cat, the Green Dwarf Farlowella or Pygmy Stick Catfish is an algae and biofilm grazing species found in parts of the Orinoco and Rio Negro in Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil. In the wild, their twig-like appearance is effective camouflage against predators and allows them to graze on sunken tree branches and driftwood.
