A beautifully and distinctively marked relative of the common Otocinclus or Oto Cat, the Rio Tigre Zebra Oto inhabits Peru’s Rio Tigre, where it spends most of its time grazing on submerged driftwood and vegetation. An ideal algae eater for most community or planted aquariums, they will eat filamened algae and diatoms from most surfaces, including the aquarium glass. Like most of their close relatives, they are best kept in groups.
One of the largest and most impressive plecos, Acanthicus adonis is found throughout much of the middle Amazon and Tocantins river basins in South America. With their heavy armor, sharp spines, and huge adult size, this pleco is a true monster fish and adults are suitable only for the largest aquariums. They are slow growers however, often taking years to reach a significant size.
A huge armored catfish found throughout many of the larger rivers of South America, the Soldier or Bacu Catfish is a unique scavenging species which feeds on detritus, dead fish, invertebrates, and even fruit in the wild. In the aquarium, they are gentle giants, and are peaceful towards all tankmates. Due to their heavily armored body and large size, they make good tankmates for large cichlids or other large predatory fish but with their huge adult size will require an equally large aquarium or indoor pond to keep.
One of the largest species of Panaque, reaching 20″ or more as an adult, the Lyretail Titanic Pleco is found throughout much of the middle Amazon, where it is found in fast-moving, sediment-rich waters. Juvenile fish display an attractive pattern of spots and squiggles which will fade slightly as they approach adult size. This species is often misidentified as the L090 “Papa Lyretail Pleco”, especially as smaller specimens. Like its relatives, this pleco is highly adapted to feeding on submerged wood and should be offered plenty of driftwood and specialty foods for wood eaters in the aquarium.

A unique and beautifully patterned driftwood catfish found in blackwater tributaries of the Amazon, the Jaguar Catfish spends most of its time hidden among submerged logs and tree roots, emerging at night to feed. In the aquarium they are hardy and undemanding, but seem to do best in small groups. A shy species at first, they will quickly learn to come out of hiding when fed. In the aquarium, they prefer warm, slightly acidic water and require plenty of cover in the form of driftwood or caves.
One of the largest of the Amazon giant catfish, the Piraiba (or Salton, as it is known in Peru) is an important food fish throughout much of its range, which extends from the headwaters of the Amazon in the Andes to its mouth at the far Eastern edge of Brazil. Known to undertake massive migrations to spawn, this open water predator is typically found in murky, fast-moving waters in main river channels and due to its huge adult size and active nature is only suitable for the largest custom aquariums or indoor ponds.
One of the more unusual looking species of wood catfish, the Parrot Catfish is called the ‘mutante’ (mutant) in its native Peru due to its unusual snout and overall strange appearance. A shy and somewhat cryptic species, it is best kept with peaceful, slow moving tankmates. These catfish are largely nocturnal and will often only search for food at night, especially at first.
One of several Amazonian giants in the genus, the Laulau Catfish is found throughout the entire Amazon Basin and is thought to undertake lengthy migrations throughout its lifespan. Typically found in the fast-flowing main river channels, they use their long, sensitive barbels to locate food. In the aquarium, they will do best in large aquaria with plenty of open swimming space and moderate to strong water movement.
A large growing catfish found in the open waters of the Amazon and its tributaries, the Flat Whiskered Catfish is an active, fast moving predator and requires an enormous aquarium with ample open space. As a powerful, large predator it is best suited for experienced aquarists with the largest of aquariums or indoor ponds.
The Vulture Catfish is a common species throughout much of the Amazon, typically in shallow waters where it often scavenges on discarded fish from fishing boats and villages. Despite its relatively small mouth, it has a powerful bite and is thought to actively attack weak or injured larger fish in nature. In the aquarium, it has a well-deserved reputation for being aggressive and so it should only be kept with hardy, fast-moving tankmates. A powerful swimmer, this fish prefers clear, well-oxygenated water with plenty of current.
A rare, smaller growing predatory catfish from the Amazon, the Flathead Spotted Catfish is found throughout much of the middle Amazon, where it inhabits murky, fast moving waters. In the trade it is often mislabeled as P. malarmo, which is only known from Venezuela. With a maximum reported size of around 8-10″, this fish is much more suitable for the aquarium than some of its larger relatives.
One of the largest species of Cory Catfish, the Hognose Brochis is found in shallow streams and lakes in the Eastern Amazon and Napo rivers in Peru and Ecuador. It is distinguished by its extremely long snout, which it uses to forage for food in sandy substrate, and by its bulky, heavily armored appearance. Like most Corys, they are peaceful, hardy, and best kept in groups due to their schooling nature. Because of their size, Hognose Brochis make for great bottom feeders or dithers in aquariums with medium South or Central American Cichlids or other predatory fish which aren’t large enough to try to make a meal of them.
A unique suckermouth catfish that truly lives up to its common name, the Stick Catfish or Common Farlowella is an algae and biofilm grazing species found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. In the wild, their twig-like appearance is effective camouflage against predators and allows them to graze on sunken tree branches and driftwood. In the aquarium, they are usually active and outgoing algae grazers that do a great job with diatoms and hair algae both on the glass and on decor. Safe for planted aquaria, they are compatible with nearly any tankmates. When kept in optimal conditions, this species will spawn readily in the aquarium, often on the glass or other vertical flat surfaces.
One of the more colorful and popular species of Synodontis, S. multipunctatus is known as the Cuckoo Catfish due to its habit of laying eggs in the nests of larger cichlid species, which then care for the young catfish as if they were their own offspring (a practice known as “brood parasitism”). Found in the cichlid-rich, rocky waters of Lake Tanganyika in Central Africa, these fish make excellent aquarium specimens and are typically bold and active fish. We are pleased to offer locally bred F1 specimens from wild-collected broodstock.
Of all the selectively bred morphs of the Common Bristlenose or Bushynose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) available in the hobby, the “super red” form is probably the most colorful and sought after. Developed over time from naturally occurring color variants, this fish sports a uniform, vibrant red-orange coloration. As with all Common Bristlenose Plecos, these fish are ideal aquarium inhabitants, grazing on diatom algae while still being safe with live plants and peaceful towards all tankmates.
One of the more unusual-looking Amazonian Catfish, the Sturio or Zorro Catfish is found in relatively fast-moving, turbid waters in the wild, where it uses its elongated and highly sensitive barbels to find prey. In the aquarium, they require well-oxygenated water and do best with plenty of water movement. Although predatory, they are fairly peaceful towards any tankmates too big to eat.
A rare species of the famed Goonch Catfish of Southeast and South Asia, the Crocodile Goonch Catfish (Bagarius suchus) is found in the rocky rapids of the middle Mekong in Thailand, Laos, and parts of Cambodia. With their elongated body and broad sensory barbels, these catfish are highly adapted to life in the rocky, fast-moving waters they inhabit in the wild. The Crocodile Goonch is among the smaller members of its genus but still reaches a substantial size, approaching 2 feet as adults. In the aquarium, they should be kept in similar conditions to the wild, with clean, well-oxygenated water and strong current. Rocks and other hides should be provided and they will generally do best with low or subdued lighting.
With high contrast black and white markings and large dorsal and caudal fins, the L240 Galaxy or Vampire Pleco is a popular species typically originating from the Orinoco drainage in Colombia. A similar, possibly related species is found in the Tocantins River in Brazil. Like most plecos in the genus Leporacanthicus, the L240 are primarily carnivores, and prefer protein rich foods.
The exceedingly rare red color morph of Chameleon Loricaria is found alongside the more commonly seen black and white form, but very few make their way into the trade. The Chameleon Loricaria is typically found in shallow, fast-moving stretches of river. In the aquarium, they prefer moderate to high water movement and large open areas of sand substrate. As their name suggests, these fish are capable of changing color, but the red morph seems to lack a pattern altogether and ranges from pale reddish white to a deep brick red.
The Tefena Whiptail Loricaria is an attractively marked medium sized Loricariid found throughout much of Colombia in sandy and rocky shallow water habitat. An omnivore and grazer, they will readily feed on algae or vegetable matter along with more protein rich foods. In the aquarium, they are not shy, and will often be seen perched above the substrate in the middle of the tank. Any tank housing this species should offer plenty of open sandy or rocky areas for them to stake out territories.
A unique and heavily armored Loricaria from the fast-flowing waters of Colombia’s Rio Caqueta, the Dragon Loricaria is a gentle giant in the aquarium and an impressive addition to an appropriately large tank. Coming from fast moving, well-oxygenated waters they prefer a significant amount of water movement and an ideal setup would include large open stretches of sandy substrate and some flat rocks. They will eat a variety o foods, with a preference for vegetable matter or whole fresh veggies.
A unique, stick-shaped Loricariid found throughout the Pacific coastal drainages of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador, the Royal Farlowella can be found in a variety of habitats including fast-flowing streams and slow blackwater creeks. They are often found heavily camouflaged on or near stands of driftwood and in the aquarium should be given plenty of cover as well as open areas of substrate. A grazer and omnivore, they will do best when offered a varied diet of herbivore and carnivore diets such as Repashy gel diet, Fluval Bug Bites pellets, frozen foods and fresh vegetables.
A rarely seen and unique catfish species from the fast-moving waters of the middle Mekong and its tributaries, the Goldline Torrent Catfish is a micropredator and scavenger which uses modified fins to hold on to rocks and driftwood against rapidly flowing water. In the aquarium, they should be kept with substantial water movement and well-oxygenated water.
The Glass Catfish or Ghost Glass Cat (Kryptopterus vitreolus) has been popular in the aquarium trade for decades due to its unique, almost completely transparent body and active behavior. In the wild, they inhabit a variety of freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, from clear water streams to quiet swampy areas, where they are typically found in large shoals. A peaceful, schooling fish, they are relatively hardy in the aquarium but prefer slightly soft water and excellent water quality. They should be kept in groups of at least 5 fish so they can form a school. Fast moving or nippy tankmates should be avoided as they can stress out the more peaceful Glass Catfish.
