    Price range: $149.99 through $299.99

A large, robust, and uniquely patterned species, the Goldline Knifefish (Sternopygus macrurus) is found throughout the Pacific coastal drainage of Colombia and Ecuador, where it inhabits a wide variety of habitat types. • Pelican Knifefish Pair (Compsaraia samueli)

    Pelican Knifefish Pair (Compsaraia samueli)

    Price range: $349.99 through $399.99

A rare knifefish found in the deep water channels of the middle Amazon River in Peru and Brazil, the Pelican Knifefish is a distinctive species, with males of the species developing extremely elongated snouts which are assumed to be for interspecific competition for females, which have a more typical head shape for a knifefish. Little is known about their behavior in the wild, but they are likely an insectivore, using their highly developed ability to detect electrical current in order to locate food. In the aquarium, they are shy and best kept in a species tank or with other very peaceful fish. Due to their deep water habitat, very dim lighting, if any, is preferred, and they should be offered plenty of cover.

Ossa / Trumpet Knifefish (Rhamphichthys rostratus)

    Price range: $19.99 through $74.99

A unique and beautifully patterned knifefish, the Ossa or Trumpet Knifefish is a cryptic species often found hiding among leaf litter. Like most knifefish, they are primarily nocturnal, and use their long snouts to root for insect larvae and crustaceans to eat. In the aquarium, they are peaceful and somewhat shy, and best kept with other peaceful species. They will usually accept frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other frozen foods, but are easily outcompeted for food by fast-moving or more aggressive eaters.

  • White Tamandua Knifefish (Orthosternarchus tamandua)

    White Tamandua Knifefish (Orthosternarchus tamandua)

    $349.99

The bizarre White Tamandua Knifefish is widespread throughout the Amazon and its tributaries but is rarely encountered due to the depths it inhabits (18 – 30 feet). Its deep water habitat in the main river channels is almost entirely dark in most cases, and the fish exhibits a cave fish-like appearance because of this. Like most knifefish, it relies on its ability to sense electrical discharges to navigate and find food. In the aquarium, they are best kept in a specialized tank with few if any tankmates. They are slow to feed at first and may require live foods but will generally learn to take frozen over time. As a large growing, open water swimmer, they will require a very large aquarium built around meeting their unique care requirements.

  • Aba Aba Knifefish (Gymnarchus niloticus)

    Aba Aba Knifefish (Gymnarchus niloticus)

    Price range: $299.99 through $349.99

One of the more unique species of knifefish, the Aba Aba is found throughout much of Africa, where it inhabits shallow, slow moving bodies of water. While juvenile fish are often found in small groups, adults become solitary large predators which like most knifefish use a specialized organ to detect the weak electrical currents generated by other fish.
