The Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora) is one of the large cyprinids from Asia collectively known as ‘Mahseer’ – most of which are prized food fish in their native habitats. Their large, iridescent scales and peaceful behavior in the aquarium have led some to compare them to tropical versions of koi. Although hardy and adaptable, they will do best in clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current. They should only be kept in the largest aquariums or ponds.
The Taiwan Mahseer or Holland’s Carp is a medium-growing species endemic to the freshwater rivers of Taiwan and Southern China, where they are typically found in rocky, fast moving stretches of open water. This species inhabits temperate areas and will tolerate both tropical and subtropical temperatures in the aquarium. Although hardy and adaptable, they will do best in clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current. A peaceful species which will do well with most similarly sized fish.
The Blue Mahseer is one of several large cyprinids from Southeast Asia collectively known as ‘Mahseer’ – most of which are prized food fish in their native habitats. The species is one of the more medium-sized Mahseer, reaching a maximum size of around 20″ in theaquarium. Their large, iridescent scales and peaceful behavior in the aquarium have led some to compare them to tropical versions of koi. Although hardy and adaptable, they will do best in clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current. Mahseer make excellent dither fish for large predatory species and rarely bother tankmates.
