Known as the “peaceful” or Cresecent Betta in the hobby, Betta imbellis is a close relative of the hobby classic Siamese Fighting Fish and is found in shallow swamps and rice paddies throughout Southern Thailand and Malaysia. Unlike Betta splendens, which has been selectively bred for long and extravagant fins for the pet trade, this species is still considered a wild type with shorter fins and slightly more subdued colors. As their name suggests, the Peaceful Betta is not nearly as territorial as some other species in the genus and can be maintained in groups as long as they are provided with plenty of space and cover for individual males or pairs to establish territories. Ideal for a heavily planted display, they are hardy, colorful, and unique fish that will do well in a variety of conditions.

Their striking coloration is highly variable, with this gourami coming in a myriad of color phases. The Dwarf Gourami is a labyrinthian fish, coming up to the surface for air and often building elaborate bubble nests. These fish will do best with peaceful, schooling tankmates or bottom dwellers.

A small, peaceful gourami species found in the blackwater peat swamps of Borneo, the Samurai Chocolate Gourami or Vaillanti Gourami is relatively rare in the hobby due to its relatively restricted range and unique requirements. In the wild, these fish inhabit warm, highly acidic waters with pH as low as 4.0, and in the aquarium it will do best if kept in soft, slightly acidic water as well. The addition of tannins to the water by using Indian Almond Leaves or Bark is useful to help this species thrive. The Red Tail Giant Gourami is a less common species of Giant Gourami which develops striking red caudal and dorsal fins as it matures. As a true giant, it lives up to its name, reaching an adult size of over 20″ in many cases. Despite their large size, they are typically gentle giants, and are extremely personable “pet” fish that will beg for food and often learn to recognize their owners. They are hardy and undemanding but will need a suitably large tank to be kept successfully. In the wild, much of their diet consists of fruit and they will happily accept treats like strawberries and grapes in the aquarium.

A tiny but beautifully marked member of the Badis family, these peaceful, active fish have been popular in the aquarium hobby since their introduction decades ago. Originating in shallow, slow-moving waters in West Bengal, India, they tend to be found in dense aggregations among stands of aquatic plants, with each fish generally staking out its own territory among the vegetation. In the aquarium, they will do best in heavily planted tanks with ample cover and in groups of 5 or more. Because of their small adult size and shy nature, the Scarlet Badis or Scarlet Gem is best kept with similarly sized, extremely peaceful tankmates.
