Maroni Eartheater (Geophagus harreri)

A unique species of eartheater from the Marowijne or Maroni River Basin along the border of Suriname and Guyana, Geophagus harreri is a beautiful and rarely seen cichlid in the aquarium hobby. The Maroni Eartheater is a medium growing but heavy bodied eartheater, similar in some respects to the much more well known Geophagus brasiliensis, and similar to that species also tends to be more aggressive than most of the eartheaters in the hobby. Like most of its close relatives, it is best kept in groups in an appropriately large aquariums with a fine sand substrate for them to sift through.
