A rarely seen member of the perch family native to the Northeastern Australia and parts of Papua, the Coal Grunter or Black Grunter is a medium growing predatory species found in exclusively freshwater habitat. An active and curious fish, they make a colorful and unique aquarium species that will do well with a wide variety of medium to large tankmates like larger rainbowfish.  Although the Coal Grunter is a predatory species in nature, they are generally peaceful with tankmates too large to be eaten.
