Brokopondo Eartheater (Geophagus brokopondo)

A colorful and rarely imported eartheater cichlid from the Brokopondo lake and the surrounding rivers in Suriname, the Brokopondo Eartheater is considered part of the ‘Surinamensis’ complex of closely-related species. With intense blue, red, and green coloration and long, flowing ventral fin streamers, this showy species makes an impressive display fish for a medium to large South American community aquarium. Like most of its relatives, it is a fairly peaceful cichlid, best kept in groups of 5 or more and require a fine sand substrate for them to utilize their unique substrate-sifting behavior. Slightly acidic, warm, well-oxygenated water and a varied diet high in quality protein will help ensure they display their best coloration in the aquarium.
