A rarely seen member of the genus Cichlasoma, the Amazon Cichlid is widespread but uncommon throughout the Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. With its relatively small adult size and attractive green markings, it is a great smaller cichlid for a community aquarium or species tank. Like most of their close relatives, they are hardy and undemanding fish and will readily form pairs and breed in the aquarium if conditions are right.
