A colorful species of shiner or minnow native to much of the Southeastern United States, the Rainbow Shiner typically inhabits moderate to fast-moving streams throughout its range, often in large shoals. During the breeding season, mature males develop spectacular red/pink coloration with iridescent blue highlights in the fins and face. Although they are tolerant of very cool water temperatures, they do not require low temperatures like some coldwater species and will thrive in the low to mid 70’s. In the aquarium, they should be kept in groups of 5 or more with other peaceful fish and will do best in well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current.
