An attractively marked, active swimming species of characin, the Threespot Leporinus is widespread throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins, and has been recorded from the Guiana Shield to the upper Amazon. In the wild, it tends to be found in large aggregations in fast to moderate flowing waters, usually around submerged driftwood or aquatic vegetation. In the aquarium, they tend to be aggressive towards each other and other tankmates unless kept in a sufficiently large group (ideally 8-10 or more).
