It is one of several medium sized spotted species of Hypancistrus found in the middle and upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. This species grows somewhat larger than some of its close relatives, reaching an adult size of 7″ and can be distinguished from other similar Hypancistrus by it’s thicker, more robust pectoral fins and lack of spots in the caudal fin. Like its relatives, they prefer warm, slightly soft water and are sensitive to poor water quality so regular water changes are a must. They should be fed a varied diet high in proteins, including frozen bloodworms, and sinking prepared foods.
