Originally discovered in 1881, Rotala Indica (Rotala rotundifolia) is a Southeast Asian stem plant that is also known as “Indian Toothcup”. It is characteristic for its green, pink, and yellow leaves that often grow densely on the stem. Rotala indica/rotundifolia is notably hardy, making it a popular choice for both low and high tech tanks. Its fast growth and tall stems are excellent for mid-background planting.
A longtime planted aquarium favorite, Moneywort is a close relative to Bacopa caroliniana with a similar growth form but more rounded leaves. Hardy and fast growing in the aquarium, its growth pattern will depend partly on light levels and regular trimming.

Anacharis, also known as Elodea (Egeria densa), is a popular freshwater plant for aquarium hobbyists. Easily adapting to a variety of water conditions, Anacharis is hardy and can fare well even in low-tech tanks. This plant can stand alone or be planted in the background to add depth to your tank’s aquascape. Be sure to plant the stems a couple inches into the substrate for its roots to grow!
The Mosaic Plant (Ludwigia sedioides) is a hardy stem plant with a unique growth pattern. It grows best rooted in the substrate where it will reach to the surface creating a mosaic of leaves reaching up to 5″ in diameter. They will develop red and green coloration and are suitable for both aquariums and ponds.

Pearl Weed (Hemianthus micranthemoides) is among one of the most popular mid/background plants in the aquascaping hobby due to its rapid growth and undemanding needs.
A rare find in the planted aquarium hobby, Variableleaf Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia diversifolia) is a Central and South American native plant. Fast growing and resembling Heteranthera zosterifolia, it makes an excellent mid to background plant in high tech aquascapes. With CO2, nutrient supplementation, and adequate lighting it will maintain its best color and growth form.
A longtime planted aquarium favorite, Bacopa is a North American native plant found in a variety of habitat types. Fast growing, hardy, and lush, it makes an excellent background plant in most aquascapes. Bacopa will readily grow above the water’s surface if allowed to and tends to grow tall and sparsely under lower light conditions. With regular trimming and adequate lighting it will maintain its best color and growth form.
