Golden Fire Eel (Mastacembalus cf. unicolor ‘xanthic’)

An exceptionally rare color morph of freshwater spiny eel long assumed to be a Xanthic form of the Fire Eel (M. erythrotaenia), what is known as the Gold or Xanthic Fire Eel in the hobby may actually be the much more uncommon Mastacembelus unicolor, a variably patterned more elongated species which is found alongside Fire Eels in parts of their range. Due to their scarcity and high demand in the hobby, little is known about their wild habitat or where they are found but most specimens originate from Sumatra. With their striking, uniform yellow-gold coloration and outgoing nature these rare oddballs make for a one-of-a-kind centerpiece fish for true collectors.

A medium sized, beautifully marked species of spiny eel, the African Starry Night or Longtail Spiny Eel is found in Central Africa, where it ranges from the Congo River Basin to several of the Rift Lakes as well as lake and riverine habitat in the surrounding areas. A popular if unusual fish in the hobby, the ropefish is an active and interesting aquarium resident that will do best in a medium to large aquarium with plenty of cover. Native to the Congo, the Congicus Bichir (Polypterus congicus), also known as the Congo Bichir, is a large, eel-like freshwater fish, growing up to 38″. These fish are carnivorous, but are considered peaceful and generally fare well with tankmates large enough to not be considered a meal. Be aware, Congicus Bichirs are jumpers! These incredible fish will do best with dim lighting, a tight lid, enough room for them to gulp air from the surface, and plenty of substrate and hiding places.

Tapir Spiny Eel (Macrognathus tapirus)

An uncommon and intricately patterned freshwater eel from the acidic peat swamps of Borneo, the Tapir Spiny Eel is a well-camouflaged ambush predator in its natural habitat. In the aquarium, they are hardy but can be shy at first – be sure to provide plenty of cover. Although recently imported fish can be finicky eaters, they will usually learn to accept a variety of frozen foods over time. Like most freshwater eels, these fish should be kept in tightly covered aquariums as they will utilize even small openings to escape.

A unique South American eel species, the Spotted Swamp Eel is found in shallow waters throughout much of the Amazon basin. A slow moving and peaceful fish despite their large size, they are adapted to stagnant, oxygen poor water and can use atmospheric air by taking breaths directly from the water’s surface. In the aquarium they are easy to keep, but should be kept tightly covered at all times as they are notorious escape artists. The heavily spotted form is uncommon and more sought after than the olive or mottled form more commonly known as the Marbled Swamp Eel.

Delhezi Bichir (Polypterus delhezi)
