$79.99 – $119.99Price range: $79.99 through $119.99
A unique true freshwater puffer found throughout much of Central Africa’s Congo River Basin, the Orange Miurus or Orange Congo Puffer is a uniquely adapted ambush predator best suited to a species-only aquarium. In the wild, they tend to inhabit fast-moving stretches of water with sandy substrate, where they bury themselves with only their upward-facing eyes and mouth visible. They wait in this position for potential prey items to swim overhead, and then dart upwards, using their sharp beak to tear into their prey (which can include much larger fish). In the aquarium, they will display this same behavior which is why tankmates, even larger fish, are not recommended. A relatively hardy fish, they do best in clean, neutral or slightly alkaline well-oxygenated water with some current. Most Congo Puffers are a tan or beige, but the much rarer orange variant is unmistakable and sought after in the hobby.

$12.99 – $19.99Price range: $12.99 through $19.99
A freshwater to marine puffer found along the Pacific Coast of South and Central America, the Bullseye Puffer is a large growing and attractively marked species. When young, they are often found in pure freshwater but migrate to brackish or full marine waters as they reach adulthood. Like most puffers, they are prone to nipping the fins of other fish, so should be kept with hardy, fast-moving tankmates (if any). This species can be kept in groups, although they should be fed heavily and given plenty of cover to avoid aggression.

$7.99 – $29.99Price range: $7.99 through $29.99
A true freshwater puffer found in parts of Southeast Asia, the Greenbottle Puffer is a unique, fast-moving species which is often found in groups in the wild. Like most puffers, they are prone to nipping the fins of other fish, so should be kept with hardy, fast-moving tankmates (if any). This species can be kept in a group of 5 or more fish, although they should be fed heavily and given plenty of cover to avoid aggression. They are known to inhabit fast flowing waters, so the addition of a powerhead for some current may be beneficial.

The smallest known species of pufferfish and a true freshwater species, the Pea or Indian Dwarf Puffer is found in shallow, warm, slow-moving waters in Central and Southwestern India. With their small adult size, inquisitive nature, and interesting group dynamics, they are deservedly popular among nano aquarium keepers and they will do well in an aquascaped or planted tank. A social fish best kept in groups of 5 or more, like all puffers they may nip at the fins of other fish (especially slow moving or long finned species) so tankmates should be chosen with caution. With a preference for relatively soft, slightly acidic water they are a hardy and adaptable species that will generally do well in most aquariums. This species has been successfully bred in the aquarium.

An attractive and uncommonly imported freshwater puffer from the Greater Mekong Basin in Thailand and Cambodia, the Mekong River Puffer is typically found in shallow water habitat with significant plant coverage. Like most puffers, they use their sharp, powerful beaks to hunt and eat insects, molluscs, and crustaceans. In the aquarium, they are a relatively hardy species and can usually be kept in a group but as with most puffer species any other tankmates can be risky. In the wild, they feed on snails, clams, and other crustaceans and will require regular feedings with hard-shelled prey items in the aquarium to keep their teeth from overgrowing.

$89.99 – $129.99Price range: $89.99 through $129.99
A highly adapted ambush predator found in the fast-flowing waters of the middle Mekong, the Pignose or Arrowhead Puffer spends most of its time buried in sandy or silty substrate in the wild. Its upward facing mouth and excellent vision allow it to lie in wait for other fish or invertebrates to pass overhead, striking almost instantaneously to take a bite of the unprotected underbelly with their sharp beaks. In the aquarium they are interesting if not particularly active fish, best kept alone in a species tank. Any tankmates are generally at risk of being eaten. The addition of some rocks and hiding places along with moderate to strong current and aeration will help keep them more active and engaged in the aquarium setting. Like most freshwater puffers, hard-shelled prey items like snails, clams, crawfish and similar are important additions to their diet to ensure their beak-like teeth don’t overgrow.

$29.99 – $49.99Price range: $29.99 through $49.99
A colorful and distinctive member of the open water dwelling Takifugu puffers, the Orange Saddle or Orange Spot Fugu Puffer is found in coastal waters around China and Northern Vietnam, where it inhabits pure freshwater areas, brackish estuaries, and full strength marine waters. Generally, juvenile fish tend to be found in more freshwater habitat but the species does appear to move in and out of different salinities with ease. A fast moving and extremely active fish, they should be provided with plenty of open space in the aquarium and do best with the addition of some salt. A predator in nature, they should be given a varied diet including hard-shelled items like snails, clams, or whole shrimp to wear down their sharp beaks. As with many puffer species, they can be aggressive towards tankmates so larger, fast-moving fish are the safest option but even then should be added with caution.

A rarely seen relative of the popular Amazon Puffer (Colomesus asellus), the Parrot Puffer is found in coastal waters of Northeastern South America where it inhabits light to moderate brackish environments (sometimes venturing into full marine habitat). A voracious eater, they should be kept with fast-moving (if any tankmates), although they do not appear to be aggressive towards each other in the aquarium. The addition of some salt to create at least slightly brackish conditions is recommended.

$159.99 – $199.99Price range: $159.99 through $199.99
One of the smallest and most peaceful of all freshwater puffers, the Spotted Congo or Schoutedeni Puffer is found in stretches of the middle Congo River in Central Africa. Once relatively common in the trade, unrest in its native habitat has made it rare, sought after, and difficult to find. In the wild, they mainly inhabit clear water areas with moderate to low current and will do best in an aquarium with similar conditions. Peaceful, hardy, and active, they will get along with most tankmates as long as they aren’t small enough to be considered a meal.

$17.99 – $19.99Price range: $17.99 through $19.99
A smaller puffer species found throughout Southeast Asia, the Red Eye Puffer is a peaceful, pure freshwater puffer often found in soft, acidic streams . Among the more peaceful species of puffer, they can be maintained in groups in a sufficiently large aquarium as long as ample cover is provided.

$69.99 – $99.99Price range: $69.99 through $99.99
A smaller puffer species found in Southeast Asia, P. leiurus is found in both pure fresh and brackish water environments but is more commonly encountered in freshwater. They are generally peaceful towards each other, but tankmates should be considered carefully as, like all puffers, these fish are likely to nip fins or bite.

One of a few species of giant freshwater puffers from Africa, the Fahaka or Lined Puffer is found in freshwater rivers and lakes throughout East and Central Africa. In the wild, they use their powerful beak to feed on crustaceans, mollusks, and even other fish. In the aquarium, they feed readily on most meaty foods and will readily take bites out of their tankmates as well. An intelligent and fascinating fish for an appropriately large aquarium, Fahaka Puffers are best kept in a species tank on their own.

The Mbu Puffer is a large and impressive species of true freshwater pufferfish found in the Congo River Basin and other Central African waters. In the wild, the Mbu Puffer inhabits a wide variety of habitat types, from alkaline lakes to near-rapids. Intelligent, personable, but also with the potential to be extremely aggressive, this fish makes an incredible display fish for an appropriately large aquarium. They are relatively hardy and undemanding about water conditions, but with their razor sharp beak and curious nature tankmates should be chosen cautiously and are at risk of becoming a meal eventually. Their beaks grow quickly so frozen (or live) crayfish and other hard-shelled food items are necessary in their diet to help wear down their sharp beaks. Given their massive adult size and dietary requirements this species is best kept by experienced hobbyists with the resources to provide both ideal diet and very large aquarium the Mbu Puffer requires in the long term.
