Common Uaru (Uaru amphiacanthoides)

The Uaru or Triangle Cichlid is an attractive and unique large-growing cichlid found throughout the Amazon basin in South America. Often found in shallow water streams or flooded forest, Uarus tend to form loose schools with other peaceful cichlids and much of their diet is composed of fruit, nuts, and plant matter which falls from overhanging trees. Juvenile fish have a distinctive spotted pattern while adults transition into a tan base color with a triangle-shaped black splotch.
