An uncommon and large growing species of knifefish, the Bronze Featherback Knife (Notopterus notopterus) is found in slower moving waters and floodplains throughout Southeast Asia. A predatory species with a surprisingly large mouth, they can easily eat fish up to 1/3rd their size in many cases. Despite their predatory nature, they are peaceful towards nearly all tankmates too big to be eaten. Among the most colorful and showy South American Cichlids, the True Red Terror or Festae Cichlid is a large growing and extremely territorial fish. The Platinum Endlicheri Bichir is a spectacular color morph of the popular Polypterus endlicheri recently introduced to the hobby through line breeding. The Platinum morph is distinguished by its uniform brilliant white coloration and black pupils. In the wild, the Endlicheri Bichir is a widespread species, found in various slow-moving shallow water habitats in West and Central Africa. Polypterus endlicheri is one of several so-called “lower jaw” group of Polypterus, so named for their distinctive heavy lower jaw that protrude over the upper lip. One of the only species of Moray Eels to inhabit true freshwater environments, the Tiger Moray (G. polyuranodon) is a rarity in the hobby due to the remote areas it inhabits in West Papua, Indonesia. The recently discovered Zebra Pike (C. zebrina) has quickly become one of the most sought after and popular species of pike cichlid in the hobby, and deservedly so. With its vibrant red-orange coloration and distinctive vertical yellow barring, it is hard to confuse the Zebra Pike for any other species. It is also among the most peaceful of the large pike cichlids, and has been successfully kept in community aquariums with other appropriately sized fish. Despite its rarity and high price, the Zebra Pike is generally hardy and undemanding, although they may take some time to wean on to prepared foods. This species is found in fast-flowing, clear, warm water in the wild and should be kept in similar conditions in the aquarium. One of the larger predatory fish found in the Amazon Basin, the Silver Arowana is part of an ancient family of fish known as the bonytongues. A highly adapted surface feeder, Arowana are usually found close to the water’s surface in heavily overgrown areas with lots of cover. They are incredible jumpers, with adults able to leap several feet out of the water, and need to be kept in securely covered aquariums. Due to their enormous adult size, the Silver Arowana is recommended only for dedicated aquarists who can accommodate these giants in either a large custom aquarium or even an indoor pond. Specimens offered for sale are acclimated to aquarium life and feeding well on frozen and prepared foods.

Long considered a “holy grail” fish in the aquarium hobby, the Blue Eyed Pleco or Blue Eye Panaque remains a showy and impressive fish despite becoming more readily available in recent years. Like many Panaque species, it is found in fast moving waters – specifically, the Rio Magdalena in Colombia, which was once essentially inaccessible due to guerrilla and paramilitary presence in the region, which has since declined. In the aquarium, Blue Eyed Plecos are generally hardy, although they will do best if provided with moderate to strong current and plenty of driftwood to both hide among and graze on. All Panaque species are wood eaters, and we recommend using a specialty diet like Repashy’s Morning Wood to ensure proper nutrition.
