  • Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius cf. bagarius)

Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius cf. bagarius)

    $99.99

The Giant Devil Catfish (Bagarius bagarius) originating from northern India is one of the true “monster fish”. With their elongated body and broad sensory barbels, these catfish are highly adapted to life in the rocky, fast-moving waters they inhabit in the wild. The Giant Devil Catfish or Goonch Catfish is the largest member of its genus approaching 8 feet or more as adults in the wild. In the aquarium, they are likely to stay much smaller however should be kept in similar conditions to the wild, with clean, well-oxygenated water, strong current and a pond or extremely large aquarium. Rocks and other hides should be provided and they will generally do best with low or subdued lighting.

There is much uncertainty on the actual identity of species within the genus Bagarius. Until there is further scientific revision it is impossible to be 100% sure whether these are true giants or dwarf species (both referred to as Bagarius bagarius in the most recent literature) collected from northern India. • Sale! Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus)

    Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus)

    Price range: $19.99 through $199.99

One of the largest growing catfish species of the Amazon Basin, Redtail Catfish is a true monster fish and will reach a truly massive size in a relatively short time. In the aquarium, they are fairly easy to care for but keep in mind they will attempt to eat anything they can fit in their surprisingly large mouths. Juvenile fish grow extremely quickly so to realistically keep these fish long term a massive aquarium or ideally an indoor pond is necessary.

  • Vulture Catfish (Calophysus macropterus)

    Vulture Catfish (Calophysus macropterus)

    Price range: $59.99 through $189.99

The Vulture Catfish is a common species throughout much of the Amazon, typically in shallow waters where it often scavenges on discarded fish from fishing boats and villages. Despite its relatively small mouth, it has a powerful bite and is thought to actively attack weak or injured larger fish in nature. In the aquarium, it has a well-deserved reputation for being aggressive and so it should only be kept with hardy, fast-moving tankmates. A powerful swimmer, this fish prefers clear, well-oxygenated water with plenty of current.

  • Mekong Goonch Catfish (Bagarius cf. yarrelli)

Mekong Goonch Catfish (Bagarius cf. yarrelli)

    Price range: $124.99 through $289.99

Among the most fearsome of all freshwater predators, the “Goonch” Catfish of the genus Bagarius have long been sought after by aquarium fish keepers with enormous tanks and a love for monster fish. Several species and variants of Goonch are found throughout the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia, and of these the Mekong or Thai Goonch (B. cf yarrrelli) are among the most suited for aquariums. These fish inhabit powerful rapids along the middle stretches of the river, near the Thai/Laos/Cambodia Borders and are found in almost tropical temperatures ranging from 75-78F, unlike the Highlands Giant Goonch from India which is found in much cooler waters. This species also tends to have the best track record in captivity, and usually thrives in suitably large aquariums with well-oxygenated, clean water and strong current. They can grow larger than 36 inches in captivity and push over 6 feet in the wild.
